5th June 2024, Lilongwe, Malawi: BURN, the world’s leading clean cooking appliance manufacturer, distributor, and carbon offset project developer, has received a Letter of Authorization (LoA) to initiate carbon projects in Malawi.

The LoA issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change (MNRCC) allows BURN to distribute 2 million natural and forced draft biomass stoves, as well as its electric induction cooking suite. This will benefit over 8 million people while preserving forests, decreasing indoor air pollution and reducing carbon emissions.

The letter from the MNRCC states: “The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change (MNRCC) as the responsible entity for authorization, through the Environmental Affairs Department which plays the role of the Carbon Markets office (CMO-EAD) provides this Authorization Statement to BURN with an understanding that the project will contribute to Sustainable Development, Environmental Integrity and reduce emission in Malawi.”

BURN leverages carbon financing to make its clean cooking appliances accessible to households across the continent. In the last 18 months, the company has provided approximately $60 million in discounts through carbon credits, subsiding the cost of stoves to households by 60% - 100%. The company anticipates offering an additional $110 million in carbon subsidies in the next 18 months.

BURN’s carbon credits will be generated using the world's most rigorous methodologies for biomass and electric, Gold Standard’s TPDDTEC and MMECD metered methodologies.

Peter Scott, CEO & Founder of BURN states: “The approval from MNRCC is a significant step forward in our mission to provide clean cooking appliances to Malawian households. We applaud the Malawi government’s commitment to reducing carbon emission through BURN’s high-integrity carbon credits”

“BURN will establish a factory in Lilongwe in 2024 and employ over 1000 Malawians over the next 5 years,” he added.

The efficiency, safety, and benefits of BURN’s clean cooking appliances have been independently verified through a peer-reviewed Randomized Control Trials (RCT) by prestigious institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Chicago, and through comprehensive impact assessments by Yunus Social Business.
