Abuja, Nigeria – 11th March 2026 – BURN, Africa’s leading clean cooking company, has received a formal Letter of Authorization (LoA) from the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This authorization will allow BURN and its partners, including Key Carbon, to sell carbon credits to CORSIA, the global offsetting scheme for the aviation industry, unlocking much-needed supply.

This is first Letter of Authorization (LoA) in Nigeria to be announced, with additional authorizations expected to follow shortly. This reflects the Government of Nigeria’s ambitions to actively participate in Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and position itself as a hub for climate finance and green manufacturing.

The authorization enables BURN and its partners to generate and transfer 5.2 million carbon credits from its clean cooking activities in Nigeria, supporting the large-scale distribution of BURN’s efficient stoves to households across the country. The initiative will reduce greenhouse gas emissions while delivering major health, economic, and environmental benefits for Nigerian families.

The LoA confirms that the emission reductions generated from BURN’s projects are formally recognized by the Government of Nigeria and are authorized for international transfer under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, ensuring alignment with Nigeria’s national climate commitments and safeguards against double counting. In recent years, Nigeria has taken significant steps to establish a national carbon market ecosystem, including the launch of the Nigeria Carbon Market Activation Policy (NCMAP) and the approval of a national carbon market framework aimed at attracting climate investments. This Letter of Authorization represents the next step in the development of Nigeria’s carbon markets.

Since launching operations in Nigeria, BURN, Key Carbon, and other partners, have invested more than US$9.6 million in the country, including the establishment of its ISO-certified clean stove assembly facility in Kano, one of the largest of its kind in Africa. The factory currently produces 40,000 clean cooking appliances per month, with capacity to scale to 100,000 units, supporting Nigeria’s industrialization agenda while creating hundreds of skilled local jobs. The issuance of this LoA will help unlock climate finance to expand production capacity, strengthen local manufacturing supply chains, and accelerate the adoption of clean cooking technologies across Nigeria.

Clean cooking remains one of Nigeria’s most urgent climate and public health challenges. Approximately 80% of Nigerians still rely on traditional biomass fuels such as firewood and charcoal for daily cooking, contributing significantly to deforestation, indoor air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. Even among households using “improved” stoves, a large proportion still rely on inefficient cooking technologies that consume excessive fuel and offer limited health or climate benefits.

BURN leverages carbon finance to bring a range of its modern, fuel-efficient clean cooking appliances including LPG, and biomass stoves to Nigerian households. These appliances significantly reduce fuel consumption, lower household energy costs, and improve health outcomes for families across the country.

Through its carbon-financed model, BURN is able to make clean cooking technologies accessible and affordable for low-income households while delivering verified emissions reductions under internationally recognized carbon standards. Joint venture partners for BURN’s projects in Nigeria include Global Cookstoves Limited, which is financed by Key Carbon. Other projects in Nigeria covered by this Authorization include those funded by the Africa Go Green Fund, managed by Cygnum Capital.

Dr. Omotenioye Majekodunmi, Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, said: “Nigeria is committed to building a transparent and high-integrity carbon market that channels climate finance into real development outcomes for our people. The issuance of this Letter of Authorization reflects the continued implementation of Nigeria’s carbon market framework and our readiness to participate responsibly in international carbon markets. We welcome initiatives such as BURN’s clean cooking programme, which illustrate how climate solutions can reduce emissions while improving the health and livelihoods of Nigerian households.”

“Climate finance must work for people, and Nigeria’s carbon market framework is designed to ensure it delivers both emissions reductions and sustainable development.”

Peter Scott, Founder and CEO of BURN said, “This Letter of Authorization from the Government of Nigeria marks a significant step forward in our mission to expand access to clean cooking solutions for households across Nigeria. It reflects Nigeria’s commitment to enabling climate solutions and aligning carbon finance with national climate priorities”.

“We commend the Nigerian government for its leadership in scaling clean cooking solutions, and through BURN’s high-integrity carbon credits, we are helping unlock affordable, safe, and sustainable cooking solutions for tens of thousands of families across Nigeria.”

The project will contribute to Nigeria’s broader climate and development objectives, including reducing deforestation, improving household air quality, and accelerating access to modern energy solutions for underserved communities.

BURN has distributed nearly 1,000,000 fuel-efficient stoves nationwide and employs 700 people, nearly 40% of whom are women. By leveraging carbon finance, BURN has subsidized stove prices by 60–100%, delivering approximately US$15 million in discounts to Nigerian households and enabling families to access a US$40 stove for as little as US$3.

Since 2011, BURN has distributed over 6.6 million clean stoves across a range of fuels from biomass to LPG in 12 African countries, including its award-winning, IoT-enabled ECOA Induction Cooker. These stoves reduce fuel use by up to 80%, cut household emissions, and lower exposure to deadly indoor air pollution. To date, BURN’s products have improved the lives of over 33 million people, saved 39.8 million tons of wood, and generated 9.5 million Gold Standard carbon credits.

ABOUT BURN Nigeria

Founded in 2011, BURN was created to save forests by revolutionizing the clean cooking sector. BURN has been in the Nigerian market for the past five years and has since sold 1,000,000 units of its world-leading fuel-efficient wood and charcoal cooking appliances, impacting over 1.4 million lives. While traditional, inefficient stoves can bankrupt families, damage their health, and destroy forests, BURN’s best-in-class stoves can save families money on fuel, limit indoor air pollution, and protect forests. BURN is now the world’s leading clean cooking company and one of the only carbon project developers to cover the full carbon value chain, from project design and in-house monitoring to credit issuance.
