Lusaka, Zambia – 3rd November 2026 – BURN, Africa’s leading clean cooking company and carbon project developer, has received a Certificate of Authorization (also known as Letter of Authorization) from the Government of Zambia, making its clean cooking project the first in Zambia authorized for carbon credits for use under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). The authorization covers the country’s 2025–2030 NDC period.

Issued by Zambia’s Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, the authorization comes under the Green Economy and Climate Change Act No. 18 of 2024 and the Green Economy and Climate Change (Carbon Market) Regulations, 2026. Zambia’s new carbon market framework establishes procedures for the development, approval and authorization of carbon projects in line with national climate priorities and international requirements.

Mr Ephraim Shitima, Director, Green Economy and Climate Change, said,
The authorization covers credits generated through BURN’s clean cooking activities in Zambia, providing households with high-efficiency cookstoves while preserving forests, improving indoor air quality and reducing carbon emissions. BURN has already distributed nearly 67,000 energy-efficient appliances across Zambia, improving the lives of more than 322,000 people."

Peter Scott, Founder and CEO of BURN, said, “This authorization is an important milestone for Zambia’s clean cooking sector and for the households we serve. Carbon finance can help close the affordability gap that keeps millions of families reliant on inefficient cooking fuels. With the Government’s support, we can channel more climate finance into proven clean cooking solutions that save families time and money, protect forests and decrease indoor air pollution.”

The authorization comes as Zambia continues to strengthen the infrastructure needed to participate in international carbon markets. In January 2026, the Government enacted the Green Economy and Climate Change (Carbon Market) Regulations, establishing requirements for carbon-market activities, including assessment of environmental integrity, alignment with Zambia’s NDC and financial additionality.

Zambia also launched its national Carbon Registry in August 2026, creating a digital system for tracking, managing and reporting carbon assets generated in the country and traded on international markets. The registry is designed to support transparency, carbon accounting and alignment with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

The authorization also builds on growing investment in Africa’s clean cooking carbon market. Global Cookstoves, a joint venture between BURN and Key Carbon, has been supported by carbon finance to expand the distribution of affordable, low-emission cookstoves across Africa.

Luke Leslie, CEO, Key Carbon, said, “Zambia’s authorisation is an important step towards connecting its clean cooking projects with international carbon markets. Through Global Cookstoves, our joint venture with BURN, we support investment in expanding access to affordable, efficient cookstoves across Africa. A clear route to market for verified emissions reductions strengthens the foundation for further investment in Zambia and helps extend the benefits of clean cooking to more households.”

In 2024, Marex partnered with Key Carbon to finance carbon credit projects, with funding supporting the production and distribution of affordable, low-emission cookstoves in Africa through Global Cookstoves. Marex provides clients with access to voluntary and compliance carbon markets, including carbon origination, market making, agency and execution and clearing.

Bastien Declercq, Head of Environmental at Marex said, “The next generation of carbon markets are moving from ambition to execution. Zambia's authorization creates a route for Marex’s international buyers to access high-integrity credits that are authorised for international transfer under the Paris Agreement, connecting climate finance with tangible outcomes on the ground. Marex is proud to help build these carbon markets that rely on Article 6 and welcomes Zambia's leadership in opening this new chapter.”

BURN will continue working with the Government of Zambia and its partners to expand access to clean cooking, mobilize climate finance and ensure that the benefits of carbon markets translate into measurable impact for Zambian households.
