BURN AND AIM CARBON LAUNCH CLEAN COOKING PROGRAM TO REACH 250,000 HOUSEHOLDS IN MADAGASCAR

Antananarivo, Madagascar – July 3rd, 2025 — BURN, Africa’s leading clean cooking company, in partnership with AIM Carbon, an international developer of innovative climate projects, has officially launched operations in Madagascar as part of their joint project to scale access to clean cooking solutions across the continent. Through this program, BURN will distribute ~250,000 biomass cookstoves to households across four key regions—Analamanga, Atsinanana, Vakinankaratra, and Fitovinany—by December 2026.

This launch is a part of an ambitious initiative to deploy 1.2 million clean cooking appliances across Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, and Nigeria—marking one of the largest fully integrated clean cooking and carbon programs on the continent. The initiative is backed strategically by AIM Carbon and implemented by BURN, which oversees the entire value chain—from design and manufacturing to monitoring, distribution, and carbon credit issuance.

In Madagascar, where over 90% of households still rely on open fires and inefficient cooking technologies, the project aims to reduce household fuel costs, improve health outcomes by lowering exposure to indoor air pollution, and ease pressure on the country’s rapidly declining forest cover.

“We’re proud to bring our industry-leading, clean cooking appliances to the communities that need them most in Madagascar,” said Peter Scott, Founder and CEO of BURN. These stoves are not only reducing fuel costs and protecting health—they’re also generating high-integrity carbon credits that deliver lasting climate impact. We applaud the Government of Madagascar for joining us in this important work.”

Igor Akhmerov, CEO of AIM Carbon, added: “This program sets a new benchmark for clean cooking at scale. Through our partnership with BURN, we’re combining world-class technology with a fully transparent carbon model to deliver measurable, high-quality emissions reductions—while improving lives on the ground.”

The stoves will be distributed at highly subsidized rates, thanks to carbon financing. BURN’s model reduces the upfront cost of stoves by 60–100%, enabling families to purchase a $40 stove for as little as $5. In the past 18 months, BURN has provided over $60 million in carbon credit-based discounts to households across Africa.

The carbon credits generated through the program will be issued under Gold Standard’s TPDDTEC methodology, the most rigorous global framework for biomass cookstove projects.

The project is fully aligned with ICAO’s CORSIA standards and ICVCM-approved CCP-compliant methodologies, meeting the highest levels of integrity in the voluntary carbon market.

Earlier this year, AIM Carbon and BURN launched the largest and most ambitious initiative of its kind, a project to distribute digitally monitored biomass and electric cooking appliances to households across Africa. This effort will transform the application of dMRV (digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification) in clean cooking carbon projects.

Since 2011, BURN has distributed more than 5.4 million clean cooking appliances across Africa, positively impacting ~27 million people, saving households an estimated $1.8 billion, and preventing over 50 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. The company currently operates in 14 African countries, with manufacturing and assembly operations in Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Malawi
